When you fly to Europe in the evening you chase the darkness. It is dark for a very long time. With enough money and petrochemicals you could make it as if the world stood still, with no day or night. Just the fake stars on the ceiling of the plane. Dubai has the same spirit of denial to it. Fake snow; fake grass, fake waves. It’s an idea with no intrinsic appeal. Everything about it had to be bought.
The business lounge at Dubai has a shower room with a uniformed attendant. Each cubicle has a fresh minted towel and bath mat combination, hot water with good pressure, and dispenser filled with golden hued shampoo. In the buffet area there is Moet and Chandon, hommous, fresh pastry and fruit salad. Downstairs families sit on metal benches, gazing at their dismal Costa sandwiches. Upstairs, the affluent drink wine with breakfast.
